Thank you for taking an active interest in GSA! As a member-driven organization, we rely on dedicated, motivated members from all disciplines and career stages to volunteer their time, effort, and ideas. All nominations are reviewed by GSA’s Nominations Committee, which recommends to Council all the nominees for open positions. Based on member feedback and recommendations from GSA Council, we’ve simplified the nominations process; below are some tips for making your nominations more effective.

  • Self-nominations are best. Self-nomination guarantees that the nominee is interested and willing and makes it easier to provide the requested information. There is no “bonus” for a third-party nomination, regardless of the nominator.
  • If you’re nominating someone else, please contact the nominee first to ensure that they’re willing, interested, and available. You’ll also need to collect additional information from them so that you can effectively answer the following questions for each committee you nominate them for: 1) Why do they want to serve on [Name of Committee]?, and 2) What do they bring to committee work?
  • Put some thought into the nomination. Describing why you want to serve, and particularly what specific vision you might have for the committee and your role on it is the best way for the Nominations Committee to assess and rank candidates. If you’re nominating for more than one committee, ensure that your statements apply to all (or include specific content for each).
  • Be flexible. Some committees have dozens of applicants, others very few; the Nominations Committee does its best to accommodate nominee preferences but also must take a global approach to fill all open positions. A flexible nominee might be first-up for an unexpected slot, and it’s a great (and much-appreciated) way to serve while learning about an aspect of GSA that might otherwise have remained hidden.

Please avoid doing the following:

  • Entering one or more names without confirming their interest and availability. Not only is this not particularly helpful, it adds to staff and committee workload without a high likelihood of success.
  • Applying for a role for which you/your nominee is ineligible. Most positions are open to all, but some are specific to students or other career stages, geographic location, or require specific prior service.
  • Checking multiple committee boxes on the nomination form but using the same generic statement for all. We greatly appreciate willingness to serve but it’s hard to meaningfully assess a candidate who does not provide specific information.
  • Turning a nomination form into a CV summary. Nominees are encouraged to provide a CV/résumé and/or a link to a personal website; use the text fields in the form to tell us why you’d like to serve and what you can offer in your role.
